Lake Kaltern is the largest natural lake in South Tyrol. The entire wetland is a natural paradise, and is one of the “Natura 2002” conservation areas.
The northern end of Lake Kaltern is paradise for water babies and sun worshippers. With the new lido and various bars and restaurants, you can swim to your heart’s content, read, top up your suntan, have a snack and simply make the most of your free time.

In contrast, the reed belt on the south shore of Lake Kaltern is a conservation area. It is a nesting site for countless rare birds and marsh animals. Over 100 species of bird can be found here, including sea swallows, hobbies and rock pipits.

This reed zone is the only large habitat of its kind between the Reschen Pass and Verona, and lies at the crossroads of several important migratory routes. For this reason, it is possible to come across grey and purple herons, ruffs, snipes, lapwings, black terns, ospreys, cranes, cormorants and white storks.
The wildlife can be seen especially well from a viewing tower where there are also descriptions of the majority of birds. It is also possible to walk a little way into the habitat along the nature trail and, in addition to the birds, you might also see frogs and other amphibians.
