Oberplanitzing

Close to the border with the village of Eppan is the picturesque village of Oberplanitzing, nestling in and protected by vines and woodland, in a vale overlooking Kaltern.

This wine-making village, which, with its old farmhouses and stately residences, almost all of which are around two to three hundred years old, is a genuine Upper Etsch Valley gem. Attentive hikers will see wonderful oriels, courtyard gates, arched windows, frescoes and coats of arms on the buildings. At the northern entrance to the village are the ruins of the late Gothic Georgsturm (St. George’s Tower), whose history is something of a mystery even to the present day. The small church in the centre of the village completes the rustic picture. Click here to access the map of Kaltern.
